26th April was a beautiful sunny day and promised well for Central Orchid Society’s annual show.

The number of visitors, unfortunately, has been down in the last couple of years, so a lot of effort had  gone into advertising the show on Facebook and elsewhere.

The atmosphere was, as usual, light hearted and a really happy day was had by everyone, catching up on news of old friends and perhaps seeing some of them for the first time after a long gap.

I really enjoyed my day, loved looking at the well grown plants on the displays as HInckley Orchid Society had certainly put on a good display. There were some really unusual plants on there, such as the Angraecum sesquipedale shown below.  This was amazing as it had the extra long spur that you read about as a feature of  this orchid.  Otherwise called  Darwin’s orchid as he was the one who first predicted that a moth with an extra long proboscis  would be needed to  pollinate it.  Many of the examples seen at shows do not seem to have inherited this extra long spur.

Central Orchid Society’s  display featured a beautiful Dendrobium densiflorum, some well grown and flowered hybrid Calanthe and Sarcochilus.

Last but not least, the ladies in the kitchen were busy all day, keeping everyone fed and the Ploughman’s served at lunch time were great!

A good day all round for everyone!!
